Do AI agents really need Web3 payments?

Notes · 2026 · Ji Zhang

AI mostly doesn't need Web3. But Web3 desperately needs AI (to keep its story going).

I work on AI agents, so naturally I've thought about this.

§ 01 · Who pays

Who pays?

An agent isn't an economy. In 99.9% of cases it spends money on behalf of a person or company, and a credit card already does the job. OpenAI's Agentic Commerce ProtocolOpenAI · Buy It in ChatGPT · 2025-09-29openai.com/index/buy-it-in-chatgpt/ is partnered with Stripe; ChatGPT places orders directly on Walmart, Etsy, Instacart. Google's Universal Commerce Protocol, Visa Intelligent Commerce, Mastercard Agent Pay are all live. Not one uses a blockchain. Even if you really want transactions infinitely fragmented (I'm curious what those would be), the merchant's own billing already handles it: OpenAI / Anthropic / Replicate / OpenRouter bill per-token, orders of magnitude more granular than any on-chain scheme. Agentic Commerce ProtocolOpenAI · Buy It in ChatGPT · 2025-09-29openai.com/index/buy-it-in-chatgpt/ 已经跟 Stripe 合作, ChatGPT 在 Walmart / Etsy / Instacart 直接下单; Google 的 Universal Commerce Protocol, Visa Intelligent Commerce, Mastercard Agent Pay, 全部跑起来了, 一个没用区块链.

§ 02 · Who arbitrates

Who arbitrates?

A lot of people misread the word "trustless". Blockchain only guarantees trustlessness at the ledger layer: payment is provable, the ledger is consistent. The service and verification layers don't get trusted for free. And agent settings make verification especially hard: the cost of verifying an answer is about the same as producing it.

Blockchain can't prove whether the delivered work is garbage. Can't prove whether the API response is real. Can't prove whether that report is plagiarized.

Maybe the one thing it does guarantee is: you can't easily refund (?). Wrong order, garbage delivery, outright scammer; wanting to reverse the payment, wanting to vet a vendor's quality in advance: blockchain is wrong for any of it. The marketplaces that actually work in reality, eBay, Taobao, App Store, Steam, all run on heavily centralized ratings + arbitration + refunds. No crypto used. None needed.

§ 03 · What does it solve

What does it solve that existing systems can't?

Almost nothing. The one thing it does easier than current solutions is cross-border money (Stripe doesn't serve China, Alipay doesn't serve the US), and a stablecoin counts as a real answer there. Decentralization is, most of the time, a burden, not a feature.

But does this one niche really hold up the grand narrative that "blockchain will be the ideal underlying payment network for AI agent transactions"? A16Z's DAC pusha16z crypto · Big Ideas 2025 · 2024-12a16zcrypto.com/posts/article/big-ideas-crypto-2025/ has the same charm as "lifting a poor county out of poverty via livestream commerce": the money ultimately comes from humans, and a million DACs fighting for the same audience's tips means oversupply, with average income trending to zero.

By the way, remember what a small crowd was shouting a few months back? They were already clinging to OpenClaw's coattails, chanting Web4.

Also: remember when vector search databases were the hot thing? Remember our old friend Pinecone? Turns out the "ancient" Postgres / Elasticsearch added a plugin and rolled the whole field flat.

Of course, this is my view in early 2026. Logging it. If I get proven wrong later, I'll go spend 0.1 ETH on a meal to punish myself :)
